From the Archive: Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor

Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor (1896 – 1986) is currently having a moment: Sotheby’s held an auction of her extensive jewellery collection this month, Madonna is directing the upcoming production W.E, which explores the love story between the American socialite and King Edward VIII, and her character currently appears in Channel 4’s drama Any Human Heart.  So we were delighted to spot these in our flagship in-store museum today: stationery dies and notebooks used by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor from 1940, including the ‘Town and Country’ Featherweight Address Book (shown above).

    I love that TOWN,COUNTRY,VARIOUS book!

Smythson ought to consider bringing that one back.

The famous Flamingo clip the Duchess is wearing in that photograph sold for £1.72m (including buyers premium) at Smythson’s Bond Street neighbour Sotheby’s in November… and funnily enough the clip was set by Cartier in 1940… The Duchess was obviously not just commissioning Cartier but also our favourite stationers too!
