The Smythson Archive: Grace Kelly

The V & A’s much-awaited Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibition officially opened this weekend, featuring 40 gowns from the spectacular wardrobe of the Academy Award-winning actress who later became Her Serene Highness, Princess of Monaco.

Examining her glamorous image and enduring appeal, the exhibition features dresses from the best-known of her 11 films, the Paris couturiers she patronised as a member of European royalty and her much-documented wedding gown, the exhibition’s centrepiece.

Kelly and Prince Rainier III married in Monaco’s St Nicholas Cathedral, on  April 19th, 1956, 54 years ago today. As a valued customer, Smythson presented the Princess with a specially made diary as a wedding gift:

Bound in cherry calf leather and vellum and stamped with her royal cipher, exact replicas of the diary were made in 2006 to mark the 50th wedding anniversary of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier, and are displayed in the museums of our New Bond Street flagship and Los Angeles stores.

Really lovely to see a piece of Grace’s history that one wouldn’t see anywhere else!

It would be fascinating if the site would feature perhaps a “Legacy” section where customers could view photographs of some of your museum pieces and read a short history about them. I’m sure that over the years Smythson has amassed quite a few interesting gems!
